Energy Systems in the Atmosphere

  1. Thermal Energy

    - Tropical areas are hotter than higher latitudes because they receive more direct sunlight for longer periods of time.
    - Temperature is higher at lower altitudes because there is more atmosphere which contains dust and H2O.
    - Areas that receive more direct sunlight also warm up more than those in the shade (Aspect. i.e. North vs. South Slopes.)
  2. Kinetic Energy

Wind: Energy moves from hot to cold (entropy.) This is what causes wind.

    - When air heats up, it expands so there is more space between the particles. This creates a low pressure area.
    - When the air is cool it contracts, reducing the space between the particles. This creates a high pressure area.
